Be thankful. I am.
It has been a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. We watched the Macy's parade, we ate pumpkin bread, we stuffed ourselves with ham, mashed potatoes, and all the fixins. We watched Happy Feet and discussed the Christmas decorations that need to get put up. But, most importantly, we were together as a family. And, on Monday that wasn't looking like a good option.
Goldie had gotten sick in the night on Friday with a fever and vomiting. Saturday she was miserable, but the 24-hour nurse thought it was a reaction to the flu shot she'd gotten last week. On Sunday when her fever spiked too high for my comfort level, I called the 24-hour nurse again and she said to take her to the emergency room. After four hours in the ER, the doctor said she had pneumonia. Home we went with antibiotics and a nebulizer. They told me to follow-up with her regular doctor and we did just that on Monday morning. But our doctor's assessment of her condition was much different. The fever was coming from an urinary tract infection that also was in the kidneys. After 3 hours in the doctor's office with various tests, she recommended that we put Goldie in the hospital to reduce the fever, hydrate her, and get the white blood cell count down. Well, ok then.
The worst part of the day came about two hours later as one of nurses tried 3 times to get the IV in. I'm not sure who was crying harder--Goldie or me. I would have done anything to have been the one getting the IV. Her dehydrated veins were not helping. If there could be a funny part to this, it was Virginia. She was in her car seat on the floor of the treatment room we were in. She was smiling so big and rocking that car seat so hard that she was literally moving all over the floor. I really think it was her way to try and distract me from the pain Goldie was in. At one point a second nurse said, "Did she just do a 360?" Needless to say, the "fun" wasn't over yet. They had to call our doctor to come put the IV in. But, within about 6 hours of getting the IV in and the antibiotics taking hold, we could already start to see an improvement. On Wednesday our doctor said we could come home. Yippee!
So, today, I really am thankful for my family and our good health. Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm glad it all worked out in the end. What a scary time it must have been!

Oh, Heidi, what a scary experience! I'm so glad that all is well now and you're all home together. I think God must give mothers a special kind of strength to go though those difficult times with their precious children.
Blessings,

I'm glad all of you are feeling better. Having little people sick is never a fun thing. I'm glad too that Goldie is home with you.
Happy Quilting!

Dear Heidi,
I was with you every step of the way as I read about Goldie. Our daughter Jane caught an infection right after she was born. They shaved her head in a mohawk and put the IV there. A couple times she stopped breathing as I held her in my arms. She is now a healthy 27 year old.
But you're home and Goldie is getting better and that is all that matters!

Oh Heidi, I'm so glad that little Goldie is doing better. There is nothing like the health of a loved one - to remind up of what we can be thankful for each day.
. . . And, sweet little Virginia - keeping the level of joy there in the room with you. It's as if she knew it would be fine all along. . .
I'm sure that your 'thanksgiving' will continue for quite a while!
xo, Bren

Oh wow what a week you've had! And your poor wee girl. I really feel for you - my daughter had Meningitis when she was only 5 weeks old and I am right there with you about the IV etc. But how wonderful that all is well now. And your other one bouncing around - too funny!
