Salute with Stitches
I bought this World War I hankie at an AQSG auction because I love embroidery. Although not in perfect condition, it showcases some beautiful stitching. From the words below 1919, I'm assuming this was stitched in France. Can anyone tell me what it says?

I think the numbers are stitched to reflect different countries. I think the British flag is half of the first one.

The American flag is in the first 9.

If anyone can shed any light on this hankie, I would love it. Maybe someday I could restitch the piece.

What a great find! I can't help you with any historical perspective or translation, but I can tell you it's beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Heidi: it says:"souvenir of France"
Tbe armistice that ended the fighting in the fiest world war took place on November 11, 1918. The armistice was re-inforced by the treaty of Versailles that was signed June 28, 1919 - hence the date 1919. I would assume the flag colours refer to the Allied Forces involved - which included, British Commonwealth, Russia, Austro-Hungary, Italy, France and latterly the United States in April 1917.
A lovely little piece of history.
