No, Mom, it's the axel

Ice has already begun to form on our pond, and the need to get the pontoon boat out of the water was becoming urgent. When Jeff saw the forecast on Sunday morning, he announced that Sunday was his chance or it was only going to get colder. The high temperature of the day was 45 degrees, so not bad for mid-November in Iowa. He came home from doing chores about 4 p.m. to get this job done, and, of course, Henry wanted to help. The girls were still sleeping and I was using the quiet time to work feverishly in my office.

I got Henry dressed for working outdoors and sent him to the barn to join Dad. They got the tractor hooked to the boat trailer and backed the trailer into the water on the south side of the cover. The boat is on the north side of the cove. Might sound simple, but the cove is covered in ice.

That little black and red speck on the left is Henry. He's pulling the tow rope that Jeff has hooked to the boat.

The company on the pond didn't seem to be bothered by all of the banging. (Those black spots on the pond are Canada Geese.)

Love the zoom on my new camera!!

Henry wrapped the rope around the axel for Jeff. (I called it the hub that evening when we were discussing it and he quickly corrected me that it was the axel.) Jeff broke the ice with a pipe and used this own arm strength to pull the boat up to the tractor.

It's a little easier to see the rope wrapped around the axel in this photo. And, Henry isn't much taller than the axel itself.

Meanwhile, in the house the girls have gotten up from their nap and are watching out the living room window at the antics of Dad and Henry.
