And, she's quilting!

Getting to help someone start quilting is a fun treat for me. And, yesterday I did just that. Our 11-year-old friend Becca had asked several times about learning to sew and we finally carved the time out yesterday afternoon between picking up kids, fixing supper, and putting kids to bed. My goal with young sewers is to get them sewing and to not overwhelm them with too many rules. If they sew and get something accomplished I think they are more likely to come back.

Skipping the cutting step always saves time! And, I don't have to worry about the dangers of handling a rotary cutter on the first day. So, the bundles of fabric from Moda that I recently received were perfect for our mission. Becca chose a line of fabric from Basic Grey called Sultry.

I just loved that little print in the middle. Anyway, I got her busy sewing quarter-inch seam allowances. I pressed and pinned when necessary. She did all of the sewing.

And, by the time her dad came to pick her up after supper we had her first-ever quilt top done. My friend Connie is going to machine-quilt it with some Minkee on the back for a wonderful throw quilt. It'll be perfect for snuggling under.

My niece Megan is busy sewing, too! And, was I surprised when I received a Christmas pillow made just for me by Megan. And, the fabric is special, too, as it was from her maternal grandmother's fabric stash. (Her grandmother died in 2006.) I'm SO proud of you Megan! The only thing that would have been better was to have been able to see you at Christmas and have you give it to me personally. Darn the weather.

This morning I was visited by a local quilting friend--Beth. We exchange e-mails and run into each other every once in a while around town or at the hospital! And, she brought show-and-tell. All of the quilts were beautiful, but I am always amazed by the Aunt Jane quilts. And, Beth, has been very busy stitching. Isn't this beautiful? Makes me want to get busy sewing.

I have one last picture to add to this post. It doesn't go with anything I've been talking about, but I just can't not include it for your daily smile. This is Goldie. While I was getting Virginia dressed for the day, Goldie started to unzip her pajamas, too. But, then she headed out to the living room. It was just a few minutes later when I went to find her and found this. Makes a mother proud.

Your holidays certainly looked eventful, Heidi. I've been so busy I haven't checked your blog in awhile and finally have a quiet night to do so. So sorry about the RSV and hospital stay! But I'm glad that everyone is on the mend. I really enjoy seeing your children--they've grown so much and are so, so sweet. You look great, too! Happy New Year.

I think Goldie is auditioning for the "John Deere Tractor Ballet". That is so cute!! The smile on Megan's face says it all...you can see how pleased she is with the quilt. How comfy it will be with the minke on the back and the fabric will always be a reminder of her Grandma. Family quilts are so special!! A Dear Jane quilt is on my "to do" list. I bought the book and the templates but have yet to start it. Beth's quilt is beautiful!!

Hi... I'm visiting your blog for the first time and see that your family will look very much like mine come March... I have a son who's 3 1/2 and I'm having twin girls 03/09 (they are guessing that they are identical). I don't know many people w/ twins, or 3 kids for that matter, and while I can see that you're VERY busy, if you can think of even one bit of golden advice for me I'd so appreciate it. One thing you've done for me already is let me see that it's possible for me to be a good mommy to 3 and still find time to quilt (I don't know how, yet, but you set a fine example!). Thank you for your fun blog! Happy New Year!

Looks like you have plenty of fabric to keep you busy for a while. Bless your heart for taking time to pass on your love of quilting. I am sure the girls will be making quilts before you know it.

Yes, Linda, that is just a part of my stash behind Becca! Remember I've been quilting for 30 years. And, for 17 of those years I've been working in the quilting industry (first at APQ and now at APQS) and forced to do research in quilt shops and at Quilt Market and Quilt Festival! I love fabric, what can I say. Of course, I've become addicted to wool in the last 8 years and have a small stash of that, too! You'll find out how hard it is to be in a wonderful shop like Pine Needles in Lake Oswego and not buy everything you see!

Heidi, just love Goldie in her jammies and tutu. Priceless. Where did you get the Basic Gray fabric? Basic Gray is my favorite scrapbooking paper. I think I own stock in them.

I was fortunate enough to have Moda send me the bundle of Basic Gray fabric, but I would check in Ames at Quilting Connection. She usually gets all of the Moda fabrics.
