Turning Nothing into Something

Seven or eight years ago, I met my friends Roseann and Jane in Fairbault, MN, for a couple hours of antiquing and chatting. There was this wonderful antique store where I bought three things that I love! A red rooster weather vane, a feed bunk that we use as a coffee table, and a darling little child's bed. At the time, we had no children and weren't even thinking about Henry yet. My envision for the bed was to turn it into a small sofa/day bed/reading spot someday. It easily came apart and I tucked it into our basement. Along came Henry. We moved houses and the bed moved with us. We became pregnant with twins and knew that we'd need the crib that Henry was still in. Moving from a crib to a big bed just seems too much at that early age. Light bulb moment. Yes, that child's bed in the basement would be a perfect transition. A crib mattress fits into it. It's low to the ground. Hmm. It doesn't look so great though. Not to fear...I have THE BEST DAD in the world. "Dad, could you paint this and spruce it up a little?" How can he resist his little girl? By the time the girls had arrived Henry was fast asleep in his new big boy bed. It's about 9 inches of the ground, so when he falls out he doesn't have far to go.

The girls are still in their cribs, but that won't be for long. They are getting bigger by the day and pretty soon they are going to jump out. In anticipation of this upcoming event, I said, "Dad, any chance you could make a matching bed for the girls?" He took his measurements, a few pictures for reference and headed to his workshop. When I came upstairs this afternoon to work while the girls napped, I found this picture in my inbox.

DAD YOU'RE THE BEST!!

Of course his e-mail wouldn't have been complete without a little humor. He wondered if I would prefer it painted Cushman orange or John Deere green and yellow. Classic black will be just fine! Now I have to get busy on those new black-and-white quilts for the girls.
