Country Living Quilts

I am a faithful reader of Country Living magazine, so to arrive at International Quilt Festival and have an exhibit of quilts from the magazine was a treat!

These were two of my favorite quilts. I loved this because of the wool applique.

Pennies from Heaven by Gretchen E. Gibbons; quilted by Lisa Calle

Gretchen is from Warminster, Pennsylavania. "Pennies from Heaven came from my love of Frakture folk art, penny rugs, and making my own quilt designs. My husband and I live in an old house in a small village in Bucks County, PA. I enjoy decorating our home with quilts and penny rugs that reflect the charm and uniqueness of folk art. It is especially rewarding to create quilts that add color and warmth to our old house and accent our primitive anitques. I decided to combine my love of classic cotton quilts with the warmth of penny rugs into the design of Pennies from Heaven.

Detail of quilt.

I also love crazy quilts and the hand embroidery. This was such a unique quilt.

Family Flowers by Janice Faulk

Janice is from Dallas, Texas, and writes "My Family Flowers Crazy Quilt was inspired by my love for all the members of my crazy family and their place in my life. All the flowers are separate and special as is everyone in my family. In all their different looks, personalities, and colors, quilts are like families--made to last and be loved for generations.

Check out this dragonfly! What beautiful work.

Coming to quilt shows also means seeing all my quilting friends from Iowa. Country Threads of Garner, Iowa, were featured in Country Living as Entreprenuers of the Year for 2008. Co-owner and designer Mary Tendall as been sitting across the aisle from us this weekend. A crowd has been gathered around watching her make rugs. They are also turning these rugs into cute totes!
