I love the Iowa State Fair
In just four short weeks, the Iowa State Fair will kick-off. Opening day is August 13, with the twins, triplets, and more contest that morning. Haven't decided if we'll be going...but why not? Then the day will be filled with watching cousin Liz show pigs and friend Phillip show sheep (including some of our own sheep). There will be food on a stick. (Check this link out...an entire web page devoted to food on a stick!) The quilt display is a must. The 4-H building is a highlight. It's all so good. We'll go back several days, because we just can't enough of the Iowa State Fair.
We have donated money (in the form of purchasing toy tractors) to the Iowa State Fair, so we're on the mailing list for the Blue Ribbon Foundation Newsletter. I can't resist sharing this article with you.

The Corndog--A Fair Favorite
At the Iowa State Fair, we all love to eat things that come on a stick, and every year there is something new and exciting to try. Foods on a stick can be traced back to one Fair favorite and classic, the Corndog. This tasty treat has been around the Fair for 94 years and is a "must eat" for many people. Why is it that our mouth waters when we hear about that hotdog deep fried in cornbread batter?
The corndog, orginally named the Poncho Dog, was introduced to the Iowa State Fair in 1915. Melvin Little's family established Little's Concessions, now known as Campbell's Concessions. This "hot-dog-on-a-stick" became popular and started to pop up all over the Fair. No one could get enough. The Little's are still selling corndogs at a rate of 100,000 per fair at their 12 locations on the Fairgrounds.
You see corndog stands all over the Fairgrounds, but you probably wonder just how many are out there. Rolliw McCubbin, Director of Concessions and Exhibits at the Iowa State Fair, states there are 18 to 20 corndog stands on the Fairgrounds in any given year! Why are there so many? So you can get your fill almost anywhere at any time during the day! The concessionaires go through a ton of batter and loads of hotdogs to make that Fair treat we all love.
Even the Blue Ribbon Foundation claims the corndog as a favorite, using it to name the annual fundraiser, the Corndog Kickoff. "Not everyone thinks of the Fair as a livestock show and many of them think of fair food, such as the corndog," said Executive Director John Putney. The Corndog Kickoff, held annually in July, helps raise funs for the renovation and preservation of the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
The corndog has become a well-know icon of the Fair over the years, so when it is "State Fair Time," make sure you stop by to sample one of these delightful dogs on a stick.
See you at the Fair.
