Let the memories begin!

Being a 10-year 4-H member and having LOVED every minute of it, my expectations for our children are probably a bit high when it comes to their involvement in 4-H! But, oh, well, let's set the standards high from the beginning and adjust when necessary in the future. This month was only the third Clover Kids meeting Henry has attended. (October's meeting got canceled due to too many sick kids.) When the sign-up sheet got sent around, I figured we might as well get our month out of the way...ok, secretly, I LOVED doing presentations when I was in 4-H so I couldn't wait to sign Henry up!

But, oh, what could a 5-year-old do for a presentation that was appropriate for him? Even with a couple months notice, we hadn't given it alot of thought until the weekend before. Hmm. Short presentation and a simple project to share with the kids. Serving treats was easy...a double batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies and a jug of milk and that task was taken care of.

What is something Henry could teach/talk about to the other kids that would be of interest and appropriate? Point of doing this is to create the ability to talk in front of a group. Speak clearly. Share information.

Table manners. Yes. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it was perfect. For me, supper time is sacred. It's often the only time our family is all together during the day. And it's the perfect time to have conversations about the day and learn what everyone was doing. There are definitely rules at our house for having good manners during supper.

Take note...I'm sure we all can learn something.

The project was a napkin ring holder that I found on bhg.com. (And, yes, much to your amazement, I'm sure, we use cloth napkins every day for all meals. Even our picnics on the porch. That's probably a whole nother topic for a blog!)

We substituted pipe cleaners for the leather thanks to a tip from my mom. (Amazing what moms know, isn't it?)

The kids loved the colorful beads.

They made amazing napkin ring holders.

There's still time before next Thursday rolls around...maybe you and your kids can make some napkin ring holders, too!

P.S. I was so proud of Henry. He did an awesome job considering he's 5!

What a fabulous first time presentation and project! It is fun to judge 4-H Cloverbuds(MN), they either will not say a word or they tell you every step. It can put such a smile on your face and in your heart. You are right to be very proud of him.

What a great topic for a 4-H presentation! My son loved making things with chenille stems. That was almost 30 years ago. And recently I noticed a young boy in church sitting next to his mom and dad and quietly making "critters" out of them. A good thing lasts!
