I love to say the A word--Applique!

Pat Sloan, creative guru and host of Pat Sloan's Creative Radio Talk Show , called me this week and said, "Hey, girlie, wanna talk applique?" How could I turn that request down? I love applique. My only regreat is that I don't do more applique.

The latest applique project that I've finished is The Tulip Tango. The design is an original creation with the help of my dear friend Maureen Miller. When the leaves meet in the middle it just feels like a delicate dance...but the blossom colors give it a punch...sounds like a Tango to me! The pattern for this project will be available on my shopping cart soon. The quilt is currently hanging on our fireplace and is the focal point of the room for Spring.

My love of applique goes back to the beautiful work of my grandmother. She did applique using traditional needle-turn applique methods. The quilt below is a pattern from Linda Brannock and Jan Patik. I purchased it at a quilt market one spring, hoping to make just one block. When Grandma got wind of my idea, she quickly said she'd just make the whole thing for me. That was May. By September the top was done. By Christmas it had been hand-quilted by our Amish friend Wilma. This is one of the quilts that I rotate in our dining room.

Over the years I have tried fusing applique pieces, then adding a machine zig-zag, like the quilt below. Classes from Jeanna Kimball inspired me to try other methods. Projects in American Patchwork & Quilting broadened my applique techniques to include the overlay method by Piece O'Cake Designs and Linda Hohag's freezer-paper method. All of these methods have their benefits to getting great appliqued quilts.

But my true applique passion as been with wool. The texture, the depth, the combination of wool and cotton, the hand-embellished pieces. I love it all.

From the baby quilts I made the girls--Leaps and Bounds.

Simple wool flowers cut on my dye-cut machine to embellish a denim jacket.

Appliqued flowers surrounding a hand-written monogram for a special wedding quilt.

To the fun, quick, and simple wool table mat for changing up the decorations.

Don't forget the needle-felted wool appliques on Tropical Burst. They are so fun to make.

Applique is awesome--join me on Monday, June 14 for Pat's Creative Radio Talk Show!
