Daily Inspiration
March 2011 marks the five year anniversary of moving into our house. It seems like only yesterday that we were saying "should we build a house?" Yet, from the moment we moved in, it's been our home. It's where I long to be at the end of every day. And, luckily, it's often where I spend my work days, too. Our home will never be finished. There's always changes to be made--even if it's as simple as what quilt I want to hang in the dining room, where I rotate quilts often. Those little changes can make something seem fresh and new. With the kids growing up, I can only imagine how often we'll be move furniture, change the pictures on the walls, re-arrange the rooms.
One of my favorite "works in progress" is at the top of the steps. It's the black-and-white wall. My mom helped turn a bunch of unused old frames into black frames. My dad had the patience of a saint to add picture hangers to many of the frames, then hang them all up for us. Our family, both past and present, provide us with the images that inspire me. Vintage photos are so charming. Black and white photos can make everyday moments seem so classic. So five years into this project, I'm loving it.

Besides photos I've added a few other black-and-white items--like this definition of Kindness. This wall piece can be found at Home Sweet Home. They have lots of sizes and phrases. Don't you love the wagon shots? That's my aunt Marilyn pulling my mom in the top photo, and my dad on his bike pulling his sister in the bottom photo.

After walking past the black-and-white display daily, I decided to put wire in one of the empty frames so photos of any size could be clipped to it. I haven't found black clips yet, so these little reds one will do until then. When I was at APQ, we did a story about quilts in old photographs. When I was searching for photos to include in my presentation that I present to quilt guilds/groups about my quilting history, I loved finding this one--that's my dad and is sister...and her baby doll and quilt. Only wish I knew where the quilt was.

This display has also given me more chances to play with my other passion of digital scrapbooking! This long, tall frame gave me an opportunity to design a custom poster using Creative Memories Storybook Creator plus.

Quotes often speak to me--and this one hit home! I found this piece at International Quilt Festival in Houston last fall at Lakadaises.

I know that the previous comment is exactly what I was going to say as well. When I was looking at the photos, I thought maybe you had dressed Henry in the old fashioned clothes for the photo. Strong genes and good looking folks!

That picture of your dad looks like Henry in vintage clothing!

Wonderful idea - old pictures never get too old to display. Find a wooden clothes pin and paint it black.
Enjoy life....

Happy Anniversary, Miss Heidi! Such a blessing. This Nebraska-born-&-raised gal is so in love with Iowa, but I try not to be jealous when I visit your dear blog. GOD bless all of you. . .
